Castle Carrock Fell Ride
Surely the best way to enjoy and appreciate the north Pennine fells is on horseback!
The ancient ‘Kings Forest of Geltsdale’, (sadly, most of the trees no longer exist) and Castle Carrock fell, is an area of outstanding beauty, with a vast network of bridleways, footpaths, permissive routes, old tracks, coffin and drove roads just waiting to be explored.
Geltsdale is an extensive tract of mountain, giving rise to the River Gelt. Consisting of gentle climbs along well trodden tracks to the roof of the fell with breathtaking views - this is a fantastic ride for capable riders.
As a Sight of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), it's also a rare opportunity to observe wildlife and in particular, the endangered black grouse and hen harrier, the rarest bird of prey in England.
Depending on the fitness and experience of you and your horse, rides can be anything from a quiet 2-3 hour hack on lanes and grassy tracks across the fell, to day rides, encompassing shallow river crossings, stoney tracks, woods and some lovely long, safe canters!
If there are unmounted members of your party, there are lovely walks on and around the fells. Alternatively, the picturesque town of Brampton is 4 miles away and full of local amenities, or there is a golf course on the road up to the ride venue!!
As this ride is partly over privately owned land with permissive access it is only possible to enjoy this route at certain times of the year, when farming activities and ground conditions permit.
